5 June 2008

Ryan, Bryan and I began in York, NE, after chasing a messy HP supercell the evening before to the NW of Lincoln (no pictures from that chase - late day/poor lighting). This day was a HIGH risk for damaging winds with a substantial threat for tornadoes, though convective mode and moisture along the dryline were both serious concerns. It turns out that both concerns were justified, as many storms formed but struggled to develop/maintain solid supercell structure. All in all, a rather uneventful chase for intercepting 5 different storms (3 with some supercell structure). The most amusing part of the chase was the chaos at the Belle Plain McDonalds as a result of a tornado warning for a bowing line segment.

Our first storm of the day near Lincoln, KS (N of I-70 in nrn KS). The storm was interested, but had little supercell structure.

Storm #2 down the line near Ellsworth, KS. This storm was slightly better organized than the first storm, but still produced too much cold outflow.

Storm #3 down the line near Geneseo, KS. The shelf cloud associated with a weak mesocyclone structure was more photogenic than the previous storms, but it was riding atop the cold outflow from the previous storms and was not a tornado threat.

Storm #4 near Windom, KS. This updraft base exhibited weak rotation and slightly better supercell structure than the previous storms.

Storm #5 viewed to the SW from near Moundridge, KS. This was the "best" supercell structure of the day.

Wrapping rain area with the storm's mesocyclone. We could at least make out storm-scale rotation, but a tornado seemed to be unlikely. We let the storm pass and attempted to follow it for a little while, but its 55 mph motion to the NE was difficult for

The last storm of the day. This gust front was associated with a tornado-warned bow echo in an extensive squall line. The warning inspired mild panic in many of the customers and employees at the Belle Plain McDonalds, while we calmly ate our sandwiches
