This was likely the final chase of the 2008 season from Norman. Brian and I accompanied Bryan Smith (who was kind enough to drive after I came off my last midnight shift) on our jaunt to the area just N of Wichita, KS. We figured supercells were likely, but overlapping storms and somewhat weak low-level shear would make for difficult storm viewing and a somewhat marginal tornado threat. In the end, we observed 3 supercells between ICT and EMP, and were within 5 miles of a rain-wrapped tornado near Cottonwood Falls. The highlight of the chase was stumbling upon the last supercell as it developed just S of Wichita. The storm produced an intense barrage of LTGCGs, which kept me from getting my camera from the trunk!

View to the W of a developing supercell. We first chased a storm to the NE of this one, which eventually produced a brief tornado S of Cottonwood Falls. We were 4-5 miles S of the tornado along hwy 177, but couldn't see it due to wrapping rain.

The wide open Flint Hills with a supercell in the background. This storm rolled up the outflow boundary from our previous storm, and showed some cloud base rotation.

My camera was in the trunk for the best stages of this supercell, back when we were parked off I-35 near Haysville. This picture is from E of Mulvane as the storm began to struggle with outflow. Still, it maintain pretty supercell structure and many inf
